Congestion Charges

While reading this article on Churumuri, I came across a concept of congestion charge, which refers to money paid by private vehicles in order to enter the central and western areas of London.

A hefty payment of ?8 per vehicle per day is probably enough to dissuade private vehicle owners from entering the areas within the city that can get potentially crowded. This is also, in theory, supposed to increase the usage of public transport in order to gain access to these areas.

As stated in the Churumuri article, it would be so cool if something similar were to be put into practise in Bangalore as well, once our public transport infrastructure undergoes significant improvement.

People would park their vehicles at home, and move around peacefully in the central parts of Bangalore, where most roads would be converted into pedestrian streets, and Residency Road can get back to being a two-way street.

Of course, London’s traffic congestion charge is levied only on certain classes of vehicles, but in case of Bangalore all vehicles should be subject to the charge without any prejudice, for we know how unruly even the most timid looking persons can get once they become part of the traffic here.

Also, congestion charges will make Traffic Boy‘s life that much more easier.
