Up with Us!! We’re backward!

The recent ruckus and riots in Rajasthan by the Gujjar community, over protests that ask for their inclusion into the list of Scheduled Tribes is a bit warped, to say the least.

Wikipedia says thus about the Gujjars, and if the article’s authenticity is to be believed, they are a Kshatriya clan (warrior class types), who are making these violent protests.

Thousands of members of this community stormed a main highway in Rajasthan, and police firing and the resultant violence left a sizeable number of people dead.

Its ironic that people in our country are rioting to be included in a section of what is otherwise a ‘backward’ class, of sorts. The modern Indian doesn’t give a rat’s ass about the caste system and most of us recognize individuals for their individual merits as opposed to being conscious of their pedigree.

Pity, therefore, that caste politics have ensured that people are favoured, based on how ‘backward’ they are.

So much for ‘India Shining’. One can’t help but continue whining.
