Ayohdya: 14 years beyond

Fourteen years ago, the Babri Masjid was demolished, leading to widespread communal riots in our country and Mani Ratnam laughing all the way to the bank a few years afterwards with his movie ‘Bombay’, in which Manisha Koirala looked absolutely lovely.

The events that took place on that day have repercussions on the Indian psyche even to this day, being featured in the election manifesto of the BJP, being the target for Pakistan sponsored terrorists and also for being in the media focus all the time.

A lot of people that were around in 1963 that are still around now apparently remember what they were doing when JFK’s assassination was flashed all over the news. Ditto for some of the other earth shattering events such as september 11th.

For some vague reason, I remember what I had been doing on the day Babri Masjid was demolished.

There was an athletic meet of the members of our community (GSB, if you know what I mean, though it doesn’t really matter) at some grounds in Mysore, and my sister and I had spent pretty much all our time in the un playing around and getting ourselves all dirty (we could’ve been part of a surf ad) while watching middle aged people play sack race and make utter fools of themselves. I distinctly remember that it was the first ever day when I was so desperately hungry that I managed to eat some laddoos distributed at the venue without washing my hands that were red with all the dirt.

Funny, the kind of things one would tend to remember 14 years down the line.
